The Challenge

DC West Community Schools recognized the need for a modern athletic facility that could better serve students, athletic programs, and the surrounding community. Their existing facilities no longer aligned with the district’s long-term vision for athletics, community engagement, and future growth. As the area continues to develop, district leaders sought to create a facility capable of supporting expanding student participation, hosting events, and providing enhanced recreational opportunities for the community.

While the vision for the project was clear, the site presented several complexities that required careful planning and execution. Existing soil conditions consisted primarily of sand and were located within a high water table, creating challenges for establishing a stable foundation and ensuring long-term performance. At the same time, the running track required extremely precise grading tolerances to achieve the quality and consistency expected of a competitive athletic surface. In addition to the athletic components, the project required close coordination with multiple trades working simultaneously on site, along with careful sequencing and communication to keep the broader construction effort moving efficiently.

Challenge Met

Nemaha Sports Construction brought sports-specific expertise to address each challenge and kept the project team on schedule and aligned with the district’s vision.

To overcome the site’s poor soil conditions and high water table, Nemaha installed a custom liner and strategically utilized imported rock material from the track excavation to build out and stabilize the field section. This approach created a solid foundation while effectively managing drainage concerns throughout the facility.

Achieving the required track tolerances demanded a hands-on approach. Nemaha’s superintendent worked directly with subcontractors to ensure the track subgrade was constructed to the exact specifications required for a high-performance running surface.

Throughout construction, Nemaha coordinated closely with all project partners to ensure sports-specific elements were installed using the proper means and methods. By combining specialized athletic facility expertise with proactive communication and quality control, the team delivered a facility designed to perform at a high level for years to come.
