The Challenge

Fort Calhoun Community Schools launched a major upgrade of their athletic complex, converting their natural grass football field to high-performance synthetic turf and adding a new asphalt running track. The project came with a firm, non-negotiable deadline: the facility had to be fully operational for the first football game of the season. One of the major challenges the team faced was limited access to ready-mix concrete. An ongoing supply shortage in the Omaha metro area made it difficult to secure consistent deliveries, which in turn complicated scheduling and caused installation delays during critical phases of construction.

Key Facts

The project had to be completed on an accelerated timeline to ensure the facility was ready for the first football game of the season.

To maintain momentum and meet the deadline, Nemaha's superintendent and several crew members stayed in a camper at the job site throughout the project.

The project was delivered under the supervision of a Certified Track Builder and Certified Field Builders through the ASBA, ensuring it met recognized industry standards for synthetic turf and running track construction.

Challenge Met

To meet the aggressive schedule, Nemaha took a proactive, hands-on approach that emphasized speed, coordination, and adaptability. Strategic planning, flexible construction sequencing, and daily communication across all stakeholders kept the project moving under pressure. When concrete scheduling became a bottleneck, Nemaha accelerated one of the project’s most time-consuming tasks—installation of the concrete curb surrounding the running track—by deploying newly acquired equipment that allowed the work to be completed in just four days instead of two weeks. The superintendent and several crew members stayed on-site in a camper to maintain momentum and make real-time decisions. That level of commitment helped ensure the upgraded athletic complex was ready by opening night.
